Officials in the Merrimack Valley worked Friday to clear streets and allow residents to return to their homes after gas fires and explosions rocked Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover Thursday.

Columbia Gas, formerly known as Bay State Gas, said in a statement that the outbreak of fires and explosions that caused chaos and fear in the three communities was “a tragic incident.”

Officials are warning residents who return to their homes not to turn on the gas and to immediately evacuate if they smell gas at their home.
