A pair of comeback wins last week propelled the Foxborough boys’ lacrosse team to the Chowda Cup tourney title, culmininating with Saturday’s 8-6 victory over Norwell.
Riding the momentum of their weekend triumph, the 16th-ranked Warriors built an early 6-1 cushion at No. 19 Wayland Monday afternoon en route to an 18-11 victory.
Senior midfielder Brendan Tully (5 goals, 2 assists) netted his 100th and 101st career points for Foxborough (7-0) and senior attack Pete Conley tallied four goals and three assists.
“We went up 6-1 early, and it was really nice to just come out early against a good team,” said Foxborough coach Matt Noone. “We had a tough week with the Chowda Cup, even though we came out on top, we were down in both the semifinal and the final.
“To be able to jump out early, and play with confidence, shows how these kids are improving.”
Junior midfielder Shane Kerrigan is the Warriors’ top faceoff man, but sophomore backup Nick Penders was stellar on Monday.
“Every day it’s a new guy for us and I couldn’t ask for more as a coach being able to watch these kids improve,” said Noone. “Nick had a great day for us — which gave us a chance to rest Shane a bit.
“It might not show so much in the stat sheet but he had two big faceoff wins that helped us halt a run from them, and he just played great defensively.”
Noone’s squad not only created good looks with its possession time and halted any rally from Wayland, but resulted in strong efforts from sophomore attack Charlie Baughan (3 goals) senior attack Aidan Stapleton (2 goals), and junior midfielder Bobby Yerardi (2 goals).
Danvers 10, Beverly 6 — Conditions were less than ideal for the Falcons, who trailed 3-1 after the first quarter, but pushed through the inclement weather to overcome that deficit and record its first ever program win over host Beverly.
Junior Jacob Rotker led the Falcons with four goals, while his twin brother, Matt, made 12 saves. Senior Justin DiTomaso had five assists.
“It’s great,” said Danvers coach Wes Chittick. “It meant a lot to our seniors.”
The Falcons expanded a 5-4 halftime lead to 6-5 lead at the end of the third quarter, eventually pushing ahead by four.
“Beverly came out ready to play,” Chittick said. “We had to adjust to the speed of play and the conditions.”
