In a 2-2 deadlock against Dual County League rival Lincoln-Sudbury, the second-ranked Boston Latin boys’ volleyball team turned to its biggest asset in the fifth and deciding set.
Bogdan Ivanov, a 6-foot-8 junior hitter, capped his 20-kill performance with a stellar final set in a 16-14 victory that lifted the Wolfpack to 9-0.
“We knew they were a good team after they beat Newton South in five [sets],” said Latin assistant coach Preston Yong of 11th-ranked L-S (5-4). “We focused on making sure to play a steady game. When it mattered, they were able to execute well.”
With head coach Konst Dimov in Dallas coaching his club team, SMASH Volleyball, at the U18 Open nationals, five-year assistant Yong directed the sideline as the two teams traded points all match. The Warriors took the first set, 25-23, followed by 25-23 and 28-26 Wolfpack wins. The Warriors were able to extend it to a fifth set by the widest margin of the match, 25-21.
At the finish, Ivanov was the difference.
“It was a very even match,” said Yong. “At the end, it was Ivanov who stepped up. He was able to put it away and finish plays [in the final set].”
Latin will play at O’Bryant on Monday.
