Alex Lane powers St. John’s Prep baseball past BC High

Senior catcher Alex Lane ripped a triple into the gap in right-center in the fifth inning for the go-ahead run, lifting second-ranked St. John’s Prep to a 2-1 victory over BC High in a Catholic Conference baseball matchup Monday afternoon at Frates Diamond in Danvers.

With the Eagles (7-1, 4-0 CC) trailing 1-0 with two outs in the fifth, senior shortstop Will Potdevin fisted an RBI single to left field and then scored a batter later on Lane’s three-bagger.

“Will had the base hit to tie it up which was huge,” said Lane, who went 2 for 2 with a walk. “I was just trying to get him in. I was looking for a good pitch to drive, put a good swing on it and Will was wheeling.”

Boston College commit Max Gieg fired 3⅔ hitless innings of relief to earn the win, while Elon-bound righthander Sean O’Connell (6 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts) took the loss the fifth-ranked Eagles (7-3).

“Normally I don’t have jitters and this was the first time I’ve ever felt jitters,” Gieg said. “At our home field, first game we really needed to win and we got the win.”

Chelmsford 1, Tewksbury 0 — Senior lefthander Shea Ryan (4-0) fired his second no-hitter of the season, fanning 11 with just one walk, and the No. 13 Lions (7-1) scored the game’s lone run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning by Chad Lizone. Tyler Keogh and Riley Frost allowed just five hits for the Redmen.

Acton-Boxborough 5, Wayland 2 — Junior Timmy Coakley threw six innings of one-run ball and senior Willy McKeon went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for the Colonials (2-6).

Apponequet 5, Case 4 — Senior third baseman Brady Ouellette (2 hits, 3 RBIs) delivered a walkoff bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Billerica 5, Haverhill 0 — Junior Alberto Carreno threw a shutout for the Indians’ first win on the year.

Bourne 2, Wareham 1 — Collected three hits and two RBIs, Brendan Sullivan led the host Canalmen (5-3).

Braintree 6, Needham 1 — Freshman shortstop Jordan Gorham (2 for 4) belted a two-run homer to boost the Wamps (5-2) to the Bay State Conference.

Brookline 8, O’Bryant 4 — Senior Charlie Brown tallied three RBIs and two hits for the Warriors (4-5).

Burlington 4, Stoneham 0 — Senior Matt Tyman earned the win, throwing six innings of one-hit ball and striking out seven for the Red Devils (3-3).

Catholic Memorial 5, Xaverian 1 — Junior Mason Reed fired a three-hitter for the 15th-ranked Knights (5-2) while fanning seven.

King Philip 3, Mansfield 2 — Sophomore Jake Silveria went the distance and recorded three hits and two RBIs for the Warriors (4-4).

Lincoln-Sudbury 7, Bedford 2 — Senior Brett Parker tossed four innings of one-hit, eight-strikeout relief for the Warriors (6-2) in the Dual County League win.

Manchester Essex 11, Newburyport 1 — Senior Harry Painter (3-1) tossed six innings for the win and socked a double, a homer, and knocked in three runs for the Hornets (7-1). Senior Luke Leavitt also went 2 for 3, notching two doubles and two runs.

Marshfield 4, Bridgewater-Raynham 1 — Senior Mike Marini led the Rams (2-5) to a win over the Trojans (3-4), allowing no earned runs and five hits in six innings pitched.

Medway 7, Holliston 6 — Junior Matt Peterson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to propel the Mustangs (3-2) over the Panthers (2-4).

Natick 9, Framingham 0 — Senior Austin Twiss went 2 for 2 with two doubles and two RBIs to pace the Redhawks (7-1) to the Bay State Conference win.

Nobles 4, Brooks 1 — Senior Jack Schwartz struck out nine while tossing a three-hitter in the ISL win. Offensively, he went 2 for 2 and scored a run for the Bulldogs (6-3, 4-3 Independent School League), who were also boosted by senior John Grady (1 for 3, home run).

North Attleborough 7, Canton 4 — Junior Russell Dunlat notched two hits--including a double--along with two RBIs to lead the Red Rocketeers (3-6).

Old Colony 16, Upper Cape 0 — Senior Jacob Worden threw a perfect game, striking out nine in five innings for the Cougars (3-1).

Sandwich 5, Mashpee 0 — Senior Tyler Wudyka threw a one-hitter for the host Blue Knights (7-2).

St. John’s Prep 2, BC High 1 — Senior catcher Alex Lane delivered a go-ahead triple for the second-ranked Eagles (7-1, 4-0 CC) in a Catholic Conference matchup at Frates Diamond in Danvers. The fifth-ranked Eagles dropped to 7-3.

Taunton 1, Attleboro 0 — Josh Lajoie plated the game’s only run in the sixth inning to back a complete-game performance from Jack Moynihan (8 strikeouts) for the Bombardiers (6-4).

Thayer 4, Dexter Southfield 3 — Senior Harry MacKinlay earned the win, pitching six innings allowing no earned runs.

Weymouth 4, Milton 3 — Senior TJ Keefe hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning for Weymouth (4-6).

Whitman-Hanson 12, Quincy 2 — In his varsity debut on the mound, sophomore Tommy Marshall struck out seven in five innings for the Panthers (7-0).

Whittier 2, Northeast 1 — The Wildcats remained undefeated (6-0) behind a 13-strikeout, two-hitter from senior Matt Michel. He also drove in both runs on RBI singles.

Franklin 2, Oliver Ames 0 — Junior Brendan Rivera threw a one-hitter, striking out 12 with no walks. Rivera’s lone base-runner was victim to a double-play, allowing Rivera to face the minimum 21 batters in the Panthers win (10-0).

Softball

Acton-Boxborough 5, Westford 4 — Junior Sarah Keagy led off the game with a home run and then scored the winning run in the ninth inning for the Colonials (3-1). Junior Lauren Meinhold (3 for 5) blasted a two-run homer and a double. She also dominated defensively, striking out 11 and walking one in the circle.

Austin Prep 3, Arlington Catholic 1 — Brianna Meroli hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to plate the go-ahead runs for the Cougars (6-2).

Belmont 2, Winchester 1 — Junior Joe Carey (6 innings pitched, 5 strikeouts, 0 earned runs) earned his first varsity win as the Marauders (3-3) topped the Sachems (3-5).

Braintree 17, Needham 7 — Sophomores Seani Silva (3 for 4, 5 RBIs) and Katelyn Saluti (2 for 3, 4 RBIs) paced the offense for the No. 9 Wamps (5-1).

Bridgewater-Raynham 3, Dartmouth 2 — Emily Newcomb produced a walkoff single in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Trojans (8-1) rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Her base hit scored Madi Peters, had delivered a game-tying two-run double. Julia Ferry went 3 for 4 at the plate and also went the distance on the mound, tallying nine strikeouts against the Indians (7-2).

Cambridge 14, Newton South 12 — After watching an eight-run cushion slip into a one-run deficit, the Falcons (2-2) struck for four runs in the fifth inning and held on for the Dual County League win in Newton. Abby Joensuu went 3 for 5 with three RBIs in the Cambridge onslaught. On the other side, the Lions (2-2) were led by Dahlia Rodriguez who went 2 for 4 with a walk and three runs scored.

Case 7, Apponequet 3 — Ali Feilhauer (2 for 4, 2 RBIs) and Hannah Pelletier (2 for 3, 1 RBI) powered the Cardinals to a South Coast League win over the Lakers.

Dana Hall 27, Lexington Christian 0 — Sophomore Ava Regan hit a grand slam to power the Dragons (1-6, 1-0 Eastern Independent League) to their first win of the season.

Danvers 7, Andover 3 — Sophomore Brooke Grassia (3 for 4) belted a homer and knocked in four runs and senior Kayla Robinson had two RBIs for the visiting Falcons (3-2).

Dennis-Yarmouth 3, Monomoy 1 — Junior Abby Hicks scattered five hits while striking out five for the Dolphins (7-1). Maddie Medeiros (2 for 3, 2 RBI) and Kayla McGaffigan (2 for 3, RBI) paced the offense as D-Y handed the Sharks (5-1) their first loss.

Dighton-Rehoboth 8, Old Rochester 1 — Sadie Pratt went 3 for 5 with four RBIs in the win for the Falcons (7-2).

Diman 19, Bristol-Plymouth 10 — The Bengals (10-1, 5-0 Mayflower) became the first team to qualify for the South tournament. Senior Sarah Alston, sophomore Madison Teixeira, and freshman Patryce Vital were perfect at the plate, batting 4 for 4 to pace the offense. Junior Courtney Hafey went 3 for 4 with a triple, adding 3 RBIs.

Foxborough 12, Sharon 0 — Senior Cam Willis tossed a shutout to lead the Warriors (3-5). Her sister, Allie, a freshman, collected three hits along with Peyton Feldman and sophomore Nicole Theriault.

Holbrook 27, Avon 0 — Senior Caroline Curtis struck out 12 for the Bulldogs (2-1).

Hopkinton 5, Millis 0 — Freshman Charlotte Cann went the distance for the Hillers (8-1).

Marlborough 16, Algonquin 8 — Junior Abby Larsen hit four home runs and tallied 10 RBIs for the Panthers.

Medford 12, Somerville 0 — Junior pitcher Emma McGlynn pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven to lead the 18th-ranked Mustangs (6-0). Senior captain Brenna Forbes recorded four hits, a home run, and three RBIs. Senior captain Carmen Diorio also notched four hits and three RBIs.

Methuen 11, Chelmsford 8 — Stephanie Tardugno finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBIs for the sixth-ranked Rangers (6-2).

Natick 10, Framingham 0 — Senior Marie Canty struck out six for the Redhawks (2-2).

Newton North 12, Wellesley 1 — Senior Jordan Jasset pitched all five innings for the second-ranked Tigers (8-0), striking out five and allowing three hits.

Reading 7, Woburn 0 — Senior Emily Eagleston threw a two-hitter for the Rockets (4-3), striking out five.

Stoughton 6, Milford 3 — Nicole Baker struck out 13 for the Knights (7-3).

Lynn Classical 12, Salem 3 — Sophomore Brooke Warren logged a complete game (six innings) and struck out eight to lead the Rams (4-1).

Boys’ lacrosse

Essex Tech 17, Greater Lowell 4 — Ryder Pare (6 goals, 2 assists) and Faissel Ferouni (5 goals, 2 assists) led the Hawks (5-4) to a Commonwealth win over the Gryphons.

Northeast 11, Nashoba Valley Tech 7 — Sophomore attack Jose Ralda found the back of the net six times in the win for the 5-2 Golden Knights.

Girls’ lacrosse

Archbishop Williams 6, Cardinal Spellman 5 — Kayleen Sickorez (2 goals) and Mel McClay (2 goals, 1 assist) led the Bishops (6-1) to a tight win over the Cardinals.

Notre Dame (Hingham) 8, Norwell 7 — Seniors Madison Ahern and Julia Greene and junior Cara Charette each scored two goals to boost the top-ranked Cougars (7-1) past the No. 2 Clippers (8-2). Junior Allie Connerty recorded three goals for Norwell.

Plymouth South 14, Bourne 11 — The Panthers used an 8-2 second half to secure the narrow victory.

Boys’ tennis

Andover 5, Methuen 0 — Junior captain David Grossman played first singles and won his set 6-1, 6-0.

Girls’ tennis

Bishop Fenwick 4, Lowell Catholic 1 — Senior captain Niamh Walsh rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at second singles for the Crusaders (5-1).

Hingham 4, Plymouth South 1 — Anna Calame and Carly Price won 6-0, 6-0, at first and second singles for the Harborwomen (3-1).

Boys’ volleyball

St. Johns (Shrewsbury) 3, BC High 0 — Senior Erik Backman Sr. notched eight kills and five digs, senior Michael McCabe tallied 16 assists, and senior Mark Samaha recorded 12 assists, three kills, six digs, and two blocks for the Pioneers (9-3). Sophomore Spencer Sweeney notched seven kills and three blocks while senior Mark Samaha recorded 12 assists, three kills, six digs, and two blocks.

Westford 3, Arlington 2 — Senior Tim Loofigian registered nine kills, senior Sion Daniel recorded seven kills, and senior Patrick Ward totaled six kills for the Grey Ghosts (3-7).

Newton North 3, Brookline 0 — Junior Cam Lee registered 11 kills and junior Gavin Emenaker recorded 33 assists to lead the Tigers (7-2).
